Pocket Your Phone

When was the last time you walked across campus without looking at your phone? On Wednesday I took a walk around the Drillfield during lunch and everyone was on their phone. This situation of being on your phone and walking, or just being on your phone constantly is getting out of hand. It is so bad that VT has put a “Heads Up” warning on a major crosswalk. This is to remind pedestrians to look for oncoming traffic. In addition to that, doctors are seeing an increase in what is now termed “text neck” in young adults. You people are too young to have neck and back pain.

I challenge each of you to pocket your phone when walking from here to there. Pocket the phone and watch the wind slowly ripple across the leaves. Listen to the birds as the chase each other. Check out the flowers around campus. Enjoy the things you don’t see or hear when you are aimlessly walking around like a zombie with your head down.

Words to Live By
Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we're too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone.
